We had a great day at both Heathlands and Bishop William Ward (and made lots of mess!) First of all we watched some animation and then we learnt how to make a thaumatrope. A thaumatrope is a toy that was popular in Victorian times, it's a card or disc with a picture on each side and an elastic band (or string) attached to each end and when the bands are twirled quickly between your fingers the two pictures appear to combine into a single image, its one of the first recognised forms of animation. We then talked about making our own stop frame animation and looked at the materials we would be using; stones, shells, pine cones, flowers and colour pastels. In groups pupils worked on a storyboard to develop ideas for their animation, and then using their chosen materials, a tri-pod and a digital camera, shot their animation. We then transferred the images onto a computer and used windows movie maker to add titles and credits to each film.
